Solitaire Strategy
What's the Secret to Winning at Solitaire?
The secret is not a single trick - it is a hierarchy of priorities applied consistently throughout the game. Players who win reliably at both Turn 1 and Turn 3 Klondike follow the same decision framework on every single turn.
The Winning Decision Hierarchy
On every turn, evaluate moves in this order:
- Foundation moves: Play any Ace or sequential card to the foundation piles first
- Reveal face-down cards: Any move that exposes a hidden tableau card takes next priority
- Create empty columns: Clearing a tableau column opens a King slot
- Draw from stock: Pull a new card when no tableau move serves goals 13
- Cosmetic tableau moves: Rearrange within the tableau only when nothing else applies
The Information Secret: More Data = Better Decisions
The fastest path to more wins is simply knowing more about the board state. In Turn 1 Solitaire, flip through the stock early to identify available cards before committing to tableau moves. In Turn 3, do a full pass through the deck on your first turn before touching a single tableau card. The information you gather in that first pass changes every decision that follows.

The Patience Secret: Not Every Deal Is Winnable
Roughly 1820% of Turn 1 deals cannot be won regardless of play quality. In Turn 3, that figure rises to over 50%. Accepting this prevents tilt - the frustration spiral where you play worse because you refused to accept the deal was lost.
The Undo Secret: It Is Not Cheating
Using undo to backtrack after a mistake is not cheating - it is how you learn. Every backtrack teaches you which moves create dead ends. After a few dozen games with undo, you will start seeing those dead ends before you make the first move. That pattern recognition is the real skill that separates winners from losers.
