Klondike Solitaire Rules

How Many Cards Should You Flip in Solitaire?

You draw either one card or three cards from the stock pile - those are the two standard Klondike Solitaire modes. Which you choose changes the entire character of the game. Here is how to pick the right option for your skill level and goals.

The Two Draw Modes Explained

Turn 1 (Draw One): Each click on the stock pile reveals one card, and that card is immediately available to play. All 24 stock cards become accessible with enough cycling. This is what you get at Classic Klondike Solitaire.

Turn 3 (Draw Three): Each click reveals three cards. Only the top card of the three can be played - the cards beneath are hidden until the top card is used or the pile is cycled. This mode is available at Klondike Turn 3.

Which Mode Should Beginners Choose?

Start with Turn 1. The single-card draw lets you focus on learning tableau management, foundation sequencing, and the basic rule set without the added cognitive load of tracking stock cycles. Once you are winning Turn 1 games consistently, graduate to Turn 3.

Are There Other Draw Variants?

Some traditional rule sets allow unlimited stock cycling in both Turn 1 and Turn 3. Others limit Turn 3 to three passes through the deck, making it significantly harder. Our Turn 3 game uses unlimited cycling to keep the game accessible while preserving the strategic challenge of draw-three sequencing.

Other Games With Different Flip Rules

If you enjoy the information-advantage of having all cards visible, try Freecell - where every card is face-up from the start. Or try Spider Solitaire where you deal new rows when stuck.
